Ending of SA1 Examinations, What is your after thought?

SA1 has mostly ended for a lot of your child and now it is time to take inventory.

First you need to fill up a quick checklist

Question 1 is the themed composition while question 2 is picture composition.

(1-20: your child needs to really copy and understand 10 compositions.
21-30: your child needs to memorised those common composition words and phrases
31-40: you child has done well and they can improve on their grammar and help them read widely so that they can expand their vocabulary and learn different ways to express themselves.)

If section A scored less than 45, your child needs to revise all the primary 5 and 6 new words and phrases in every chapter and reinforces their knowledge by doing sentence construction every day. Hanyu Pinyin, word application, grammer and vocabulary are essential in this section.

If section B scored less than 20, than your child either need to overcome comprehension phobia by doing more comprehension questions, or they need to be very careful in their answers and be encouraged to write more. Its better to make some errors(1.5-3.5 marks) than to get 0-5 marks in this section.
Comprehension is actually quite easy to score if they mastered the vocabulary and the grammar. students don't read precisely because they don't recognise words and cannot understand deeper meaning.

Students need to read their textbook texts aloud everyday, do record them their reading in smart phones so that they can hear their own voices.do read all the chapters in primary 5 to 6 textbooks to expose them to a variety of texts.

After reading all the textbook texts, let them read story books on audio. This will expand their knowledge of words.

Yes you may train your child to memorise the words and meaning together with hanyu pinyin from primary 4-6 textbooks too.

Reading passages

Make sure there is NO Hanyu Pinyin, as Hanyu Pinyin would be more a hindrance than an aid. There will NOT be Hanyu Pinyin in the examination passage so your child had to take the hard path else they will lose they edge in examination.

Reading the textbook texts everyday is one of the best ways to improve on reading passage.

The other method to improve reading passages is to take psle passages from the psle booklet and learn every words via edictionary or google translate! until your child can fluently recite the passage in whole.

Video Oral is new and the content tested are actually quite different, new text format actually are more conversational then mere describing a picture.

This means your child need to be able to converse along common theme such as recycling, coutesy, manners, success etc.
To train your child to talk with some content, please let talk to them about these topics and guide them about the main points.

Question 1: what do you see in the video, describing in details the events in the video.

Question 2: Did you or your friend done something and what do you think or feel?

Question 3: What do you think the school can do for the students regarding this problem?

Do ensure they can have more than 1 point per question and they can go in depth with their own insight.

Generally students can score in this paper as it just involved with basic listening skills and some analytic skills.

Now we are coming to the end of term, if your child is getting negative like saying things like cannot do, hard to do, don't know, I am weak etc, please talk to them positively, change their negative state quickly before it become a vicious cycle.

Now let Tony Ribbons give you some ideas to help your child turn their dreams to reality by changing their states quickly.

Now with SA1 finished or near finished, I hope your child has build a habit of studying. Studying is not hard, its building a habit of studying that is hard.

Your child's good study habits will be their future good work habits and ethos so it pays to build their habits early.

Time is your best friend if you let it work for you.

By this step you have Identitied 3 things:-

A) Goal: Do your child want to get an A or a B or Just a pass?
B) Workload: How much to study to get the Goal?

If your child is lacking in Primary 4, its about 1000 words to pass and 1500 words to get an A.

If your child did not do well in primary 5, its about 600 words to pass and about 1000 words to get an A.

If your child has been doing well in primary 5, then your child needs to revise every thing at least once and learn new words fast by reading compositions from China primary 4-6 child or reading secondary 1-3 compositions.

As the new Oral format requires some news knowledge about Singapore and local cultures, its best to listen and watch Channel 8 News video often.

Take an Example: Traffic accidents involving Motorist has been on the rise.

Now you go thought the video with your child, then ask them to firstly tell you the moral of the video, which is there had been a rise in traffic accidents involving motorists.

Secondly you asked them to outline the 3 reasons for the rise in motorist accidents.

Then you can asked them if they are the motorist, or the car driver or the the road user, what would they do on the road to be safe.

If you want to analyse your child's performance you could record your child's answer on video and analyse their performance.

There are 4 things to measure in an oral conversation:-

1) The language usage, is your child using the correct words and phrases to express themselves and are they using idioms and other more sophisticated way to express themselves. That is they are using not just simple grammatically correct sentences.

2) Your child should be able to correctly identify the theme or moral of the story accurately, take a stand and stand up to their viewpoints with reasons.

Yes students who took 2 sides of the stand and students who cannot make a stand are not doing well here.

Your child must have a stand.

3) Your child should be able to do some simple reasoning for his/her stand. 2 to 3 reason to support their stand will help a lot.

4) Your child needs to relate a story and tell the story well with
a) expressions

b) emotions

c) idioms and phrases

d) and proper pronunciation.

4) Proper courtesy are essential like asking to be seated, smile at examiners, looks calm and polite, maintain some eye contact.

Do watch a video on Singapore affairs that are local and directly related to a student everyday and practice the above answering method.

Another new item is the simple letter writing segment.

There are some thing to look out for.

Firstly, the points are directly given in the notice or note, Do not fabricate facts.

Secondly, do write down the details as most marks are quite minor as every point is like 0.5 marks, so take care of the details and write them in.

Thirdly, Most questions is about the 5 w and 1 H so figure out them quickly will help with your answer a lot.

5W1H :Who,Where,When,What,Why and How.

Do take a look at all the Notes, Advertisements and Notices every where in your surrounds and learn to understand their word usage etc.

C) Plan you childs Daily activities and Add 30 minutes to 2 hours everyday to do just Chinese work.

There are just 4 types of work daily
1) Word recognition and quick spelling of primary 4 to 6 words and phrases.

2) Reading, Reciting Very good Compositions and memorizing them paragraphs by paragraphs.  

3) Listening and watching Channel 8 news that are local and current. parents should try to let them tell you what did they watched and why such things happened.

4) Record down your child reading the textbook chapters, one at a time.

小学阅读理解之我的孩子不明白篇章在说什么？

小学的华文篇章其实多数并不是很难懂得，问题是学生需要三大能力才能破解文章内容：-

1）熟读小一到小六课文的所有词接下来就是汇、成语及虚词（词语熟悉能力）

一篇理解篇章通常不会乱出词语，因为许多老师在出题时多遵照“没交的内容不出考题”的不成文原则。所以许多考卷的词汇多是学生平常读到的。因此熟读每年课文中的200-300个识读字和识写字是学生的基本功。没有良好的基本功就应该用读字卡的方法，把所有的字词背熟。其他的方法包括朗读听写（就是先朗读、明白词义，然后听写）或背句子（就是把词语全部写成句子，然后背句子，听写/默写）

2）过了词语关，接下来就是多读好作文

作文必须是17/20以上的作文，这样才能学到好词好句和明白多数佳句的意义。不过不必多，只要把作文倒背如流就好了。背作文的重点是从一句一段开始背诵。然后一段一段地背诵。记得必须朗读作文，才开始默写才有用，不然学生还是没有读进脑里，也是徒然。

如何证明学生把作文读进脑里呢？让学生写一篇作文，而且作文必须是靠近第一篇或第二篇作文。只要学生能运用新学到的词语就证明背作文起作用了。

3）每天写一段。
心情描写、人物描写、物品描写、性格描写、行为描写等等要天天写，天天复习。一旦看见好词佳句，就要拿来练习、复习，用功自然会增长描写的功夫。
