How one student followed my 3 milestone plan to pass his PSLE Chinese in 1 years.

Is Chinese really important in PSLE 2020?
Yes. we all know that PSLE 2020 is still using the average graded T-score so your subject results will be compared to the whole batch of students taking PSLE 2020 and your T-score will be moderated against the overall result of the whole batch of students. so if your one subject fail, your T score will drop a lot.
Since I do not have the overall scores for each subjects of all the students in 2020, i will use an estimated T-score formula to calculate your children's T-score to show my point.

Estimated T-score without knowing every subjects mean result = sum of subjects result x 0.75

If you have all subjects 90 marks, your estimated T-score is 270. What if your Chinese just pass by 50 marks, you will get estimated 240 and you could still apply for good schools but if you score 270 you could go any schools you want. This happens with any decrease in scores for any subjects involved.

Therefore we can conclude that Chinese is very important in your PSLE result so every subject is important in PSLE.

Why Chinese and not other subjects?
Because Chinese is a second language and its only used in school for 6-7 hours out of 60 hours in a normal week. That's about 10% of the school week teaching time.  The environment for studying Chinese in School as experienced by my students are quite negative, either the teachers have a lot to say but none of it is on study methods, or schools may prescribe study material yet nothing is said about what are the most important skills to master from those material. So most of the time, you can imagine every student is essentially going a up hill battle to master Chinese.

However, Chinese is not hard to master at all (You need to know that the level of knowledge of Chinese has been altered to match that of the present day students) and one need to study it using strategies to maximize learning effectiveness. However you would see a lot of students study Chinese with pure determination or just plain give up. Not many students could figure out a way to study Chinese easily.

Why the 3 milestone plan worked?
The 3 milestone plan are very easy to monitor, very easy to follow and very easy to practice. The method build 2 things in the character of a student: Habits and progression. This is like a game where students know their status and results everyday. So if one student lacks progress. It could be easily caused by 2 things, either the student broke their good habits and develop bad ones, or the student is not effective in their study method or in other words the study method may not suit the students learning method.

How to tackle the PSLE Chinese Paper?
PSLE Chinese has 4 papers namely
Paper 1: Composition (picture composition or topic composition)
Paper 2: written paper which are divided into 2 sections, section A is to focus on words and sentences. Section B is to focus on comprehension.
Paper 3 is Listening Comprehension which your suppose to focus on listening and note some basic understanding.
Paper 4 is the oral paper which your suppose to focus on reading with emotion and speaking with confidence. Of course you would need to familiarize the students with words, phrases and sentences that are commonly used in certain topics.
Every paper requires some knowledge and some tactics to study them. This part could be up to the school teachers or parents.

There is 3 things to know in this method:
1) Score 50/50 for paper 2 section A.
2) Score 22/40 for paper 2 section B comprehension.
3) Score 32/40 for composition.
When you achieved the 3 milestones, you got 104 out of the 200 marks.
This excludes how well you score for oral and listening comprehension.

How long will results show?
Well, results only show when students do there tasks everyday for a certain duration.

I have a student who almost passed till primary 6 SA1 and he studied diligently for 1 year, then he passed his preliminary examination!

Will my child be suited for this method?
Maybe you should ask yourself 3 questions?
1) Will my child do his assigned task everyday without fail?
2) Will my child think that they deserved better results if they worked for it?
3) Will your child be motivated to do more everyday?
If your child says no to more than 1 questions then you need to motivate your child in the correct direction. I can show your child the way, but I cannot walk the path for him!

Lastly, every book on the shelves teach some sort of method to study, what I teach is very personal and its custom made for your child as I believe every child is different, so it is impossible to have one method that fits every child.

How to study effectively for your PSLE Chinese

Your study method almost determine your result. If you are not performing, then you need to rethink your study methods and refine them.

1) Your Environment matters
Every day study at the same place, same time, and same setting. Set up your study table with nothing except your necessary materials. That's right keep everything that distract you out of sight, and learn to be focus.

Top distractions include Hand phone, music etc. So keep focused and set yourself
 up to success.

2) Plan out your study schedule, space out different subjects, keep breaks in between study sessions. And keep to your own schedule.

3) Record your marks down for every section of test paper to track improvement and progress

4) Find out your objective to study, put it in words and print out, then paste on your wall.

5) Listen in class and take good notes, notes need to help you study, not repeat teachers words.

6) Revise your notes always. keep a habit of reading your own notes everyday.

7) Keep a record of assignments on a piece of paper or take hand phone notes on assignments.

Then you need to keep a study mindset.

You need to know that you study to learn, not for something else like results etc.

Now these are ways to help improve your study mindset:

  • Aim to think positively when you study, and remind yourself of your skills and abilities.
  • Avoid catastrophic thinking. Instead of thinking, “I’m a mess, I’ll never have enough time to study for this exam,” look at it like, “I may be a little late to study as much as I’d like, but since I’m doing it now, I’ll get most of it done.”
  • Avoid absolute thinking. Instead of thinking “I always mess things up,” the more objective view is, “I didn’t do so well that time, what can I do to improve?”
  • Avoid comparing yourself with others, because you usually just end up feeling bad about yourself. Your skills and abilities are unique to you, and you alone.

And lastly you need to be aware of your objective!

What is your objective?
How are you doing now?
How to bridge the gap from now to your objective?

Write down 1 objective

__________________________________

Now does that make you happy?

yes/no

Why?

So is your objective spark joy?

If yes, choose that objective, else choose a new objective.

Why, because if you objective does not make you happy, it will not make you happy.

Good luck.

What Not to bring to Trips!!!!!

This is First week of June Holidays, most of us should be either in a holiday or planning some holiday trips.

So I will just go on with What Not to bring to Trips:
1) Homework: this is very obvious but most miss the point. If you are going for a trip, why would you bring your homework? to study overseas! I think you can bring a book but bringing homework for holiday is like you bring work home to work on it and later found that home is really not a productive place and you end up bring work to work again on Monday.

2) Study materials: as point 1 mentioned, you are on a trip, take the break and enjoy the trip, those material will be just a burden. At most just bring a book to enjoy.
PS, Oh you can enjoy your homework overseas with SLS(Singapore Learning Space for all schools), ezhishi or some on-line portal with your hand phone so no reason to bring work to play!

So have you enjoyed the post.

some online works that you can bring to trips......just joking!

The 3 steps to scoring in PSLE Chinese?

The 3 steps to scoring in PSLE Chinese?

1) Do something Chinese everyday!
Study 3 words, know their word formation, its hanyu pinyin, its word pair (aka 配词), and how to use them in sentences via 造句. This helps in the overall word recognition and builds vocabulary necessary for all papers. best if you read the words 7 times and write them 7 times. 7 is the magic number to remember things and repeat it enough times for long term memory.

2) Read a good paragraph everyday and try to memorize them. Reading is not a good way to study, memorizing and dictation is better. But memorizing and applying them in compo is even better! Application of knowledge can help make boring things interesting.
(hint: write a paragraph everyday.)

3) read aloud the textbook passages everyday, this exercise builds a sense of language which is lacking in most students.

So good day for all and hope you learn something - do something Chinese Everyday will help you improve your grades.....REALLY!

How to make chinese lessons interesting? For those who don’t like chinese.

1) Words wise, play with the parts(偏旁) and the sides(部首). You can create new meanings with them, string them in a short story and make sure the story is funny. The traditional ones is the
一个日本人,拿着一把刀,站在大门口,砍了四个人。It is the word zhao 照 which means shining. I could create something like there is a Sun (日) which shore lights rays like (刀)on the mouth (口) and the mouth dropped 4 saliva (四个点). Visual stories tend to be remembered better than non logical ones.

2) Let them play with Chinese words and phrases. Play creates good memories and enhances learning. using parts and sides, let pupils go into text book and find as many words based on parts or sides. let them compete for best finders' award. (good for primary schools) find word pairs, find cheng yu that started with certain words etc, make sure the process is fun.

3) Do with a time limit
Pupils loved a challenge and certainly loved timed challenges. I tried "find a word in dictionary in 12 seconds", "Read a paragraph in 2 minutes" or "read all spelling words in 5 minutes". Show them the clock, demo once for them and time your try. Ask them if they can win you by doing it using less time or do more for same time. Encourage good try, let them win a few times (innocently) to enhance their interest. (even if the improvement is 0.01 seconds, to pupils its means a lot to praise that improvement.) At conclusion show that they have improved would inspire them.

4) coach with the objective in mind and their obstacles in sight.
Set their objective straight and know their hardship.
Common hardship:-
a) lack of vocabulary
b) unable to read words apart from spelling lists.
c) unable to pronounce words correctly
d) lack of knowledge on grammar and sentence structure.
e) lack of motivation to study
f) lack of focus and willingness
etc

Some common objectives of our young ones and a common reason for it:
a) wanted to be a star/k-pop star/actor(ess)/sports star/youtuber/muser/popular blogger/instagram star etc. (why study so hard if I can earn more?)
b) wanted to ignore Chinese and score in PSLE.( I'm hoping for an exemption from Chinese etc)
c) wanted an A in Chinese (but plays game like crazy and in every situation)
d) don't know what I want????? (because I really have no idea about my future)

Just like a doctor, look for symptoms and discover the obstacles and prescript medicine to cure. Most obstacles are just symptoms of bad habits, bad manners and bad thinking processes; alter their habits and their results will show.

Now this is in request of a reader on how to make Chinese interesting, hope you like it.

Reasons why Chinese tuition can help your children?

Chinese language is your mother tongue so we can teach them, we can reverse engineer the school test papers and ask our children to test again so that they can improve. and there is a lot of assessment papers and books to let our children do it. so why do we need tuition?

The reasons of Chinese tuition could be one of the three, as I understand,
Firstly, The syllables are changing and you need the tutor to catch up with times. 2017, we just saw the first batch of graduates from PSLE Chinese using the new format Chinese examination format with Video for oral and new format for both the higher Chinese and Chinese papers. To the students taking the papers, the changes in the papers are very important things to know. Of course you can take 2016 and 2017 papers and compare them item by item, but how many of you have the patient to do that?

When I was writing the assessment for PSLE Chinese and its second edition, I have gone through all the changes in the new format compared to the old and I have simplified it to be

Paper      Changes
1              Pictures are not so linked and you need to have a complete picture before writing
2              more marks for language knowledge, less questions for comprehension and a new note writing which do not need pupil's to remember the format. New comprehension questions are more higher order thinking ones.
3              LC has 2 new questions with graphical answer and both are not direct questions, rest are similar to last year questions.
4              recitation is the same, video portion requires students to know about topics relevant to their life and students to be able to cook real life stories.

Secondly, tuition promotes structured learning which helps students by building habits and gaining new skills every lessons. Students often get into bad habits like doing work last or not revising at all and gain some bad attitude from friends which will lead to suffering results. Tuition can help reverse that by building new habits with a new environment.

Thirdly, Tuition that sets goal and build schedules to catch up and win will win as it is build students' attitude in life. Yes attitude determines one's achievements.

In conclusion, Tuition is like the emperor asking a well learnt teacher to coach his princes, you should be looking at academic knowledge, structured learning and goal setting. And as parents you need to reinforce habits and goals so that children benefit from Chinese tuition.

PSLE is just part of a larger road map people travel in their life, lets not forget what matters most!

Today, in fact last week, I was touched by this video circulating in the web and lets enjoy what matter most.

My friend once told me, what matter most is if your child feels the love and that you loved them in PSLE. The T score do not actually stop them from become the best if you loved them anyway.

What is your goal in PSLE 2018?

People and students often tell me what happened in their holidays and their dream school. I am glad that life is well for them.
However, staying in the comfort zone will not lead to better results, Its determination and persistant effort to improve everyday that creates better result.
Are you satisfied with your results, if no then
what is your goal for PSLE 2018?
Goals help one find out what they want, and from there you find out how to get there.

Last year I forgotten to reveal the one little thing about success, that success leaves a trail and a mentor would be best for students to get the success they want.

A mentor could be your parents, your friends or even your teachers. So aside from setting a goal, get a mentor to lead you the path with less struggle.
There is 3 kinds of knowledge:
1) those that you know,
2) those that you know you need to learn and

3) those that you do not know.

Of the 3 types of knowledge, its the knowledge that you do not that will help you the most as those knowledge are some thing that you will never discover if not your mentor.

A mentor had gone the path you want to success in and had success with it, They can tell you something that you do not know and help you avoid the traps and harness your hidden talents.

“
One of the greatest values of mentors is the ability to see ahead what others cannot see and to help them navigate a course to their destination.
John C. Maxwell
So in conclusion, you see scientist had great mentors, artists had great mentors, even great thinker had mentors. for example, Warren Buffet the greatest investors in US learnt from Benjamin Graham.
"Benjamin Graham, the father of value investing and one of Buffett's professors at Columbia Business School. "Ben Graham was certainly the man who set me on the course that's worked now for a good many years," Buffett says." CNBCSep 29, 2017

How about Albert Einstein? He credits his mentor Konstantinos Karathodoris,
"We all know about Albert Einstein, the founder of the theory of relativity but how about the person who taught him and showed him the way to a bright scientific journey which would change the world? That was his teacher, Konstantinos Karathodoris. During one of his last pubic appearance Albert Einstein said, “You ask me to answer to all sorts of questions, but no one has ever wanted to know who was my teacher, who showed me the way to the higher mathematical science, thought and research. I simply say that my teacher was the unrivaled Greek Konstantinos Karatheodoris, to who we owe everything…” Indeed, it was a Greek from Thrace. He has not only been in touch with Einstein but has also helped him to complete the theory of relativity. "
In Chinese saying, the teacher leads the way to the door, whether the student is successful depends on each student.
One way to be successful in PSLE 2018 is to find out and put 7 habits into your life. Good luck!

First Case studies of success 2017

Boy A was from a neighborhood primary school in Singapore and he has not passed composition and paper 2 in primary 4. When We get together to assess the situation at the end of primary 5, he was not too optimist about even passing paper 1 and paper 2. But from his eyes, I see a desire to achieve success in his PSLE.

So I make it very clear from the start that only hardworking pupils will make it, he was not comfortable but he said firmly, "I will get an A!"

So we went through the process of goal setting, target setting and every week we will review what need to be done and celebrate what had been done. He was not too hopeful back then but he carried out all his work diligently week after week.

He studied the word lists in primary 5 and 6 textbooks word by word, writing notes on their meaning, character and hanyu pinyin. He would repeat this process every month and continue to revise those words now and then. And every week we would go through those words and nouns and practice on reading those textbook passages repeatedly.

After 3 months, His composition almost passed and his paper 2 showed improvement especially section A MCQ where he got a pass 26/50.
(If you can write a composition with less grammar mistake, less sentence construction mistake and less misspelling then you have half won the battle.)

Then our focus turned to composition where he would write a composition every week, memorize a list of phrases and nouns and to try to memorize a good composition week after week.

The first composition is super hard, he was no used to memorizing so much content so we cut the composition into pieces of sentences. we started from the first sentence, then the second then the third and the last in the first paragraph. this process continued for several weeks until he got used to the process and the process got faster and faster. then we started to write the composition from memory.

Every week we learnt a new composition, read them out aloud and then memorized them. Then he was to write the composition using his own word words. Why not copy? well I have tried that and children tend to blindly copied everything and learnt nothing from it.

SA1 results shown that he not only passed paper 1 (24/40) and he passed paper 2 too. (I think its due to his expended vocabulary, his MCQ got 32/50.)

Then as July draws nearby, We again changed our focus to oral which is due mid September. There are 2 parts in oral, so we start to read out 5 oral passages weekly and hand in as audio clips via whatsapp or sms. He was delighted to hear his voice and I get to check on his process daily.

But He started to be nervous and felt pessimistic, falling for the weaker himself. I coach him on how to handle stress and fear. And he moved on.

Nearer oral, I practice with him the oral process and what the 3 questions would be. And I go through several topics which I think is very important for PSLE.

(Remember pre-oral I listed down the important contents(topics)
1) Keep our environments clean
2) Go Green, earth hour, recycling, reuse etc
3) Traffic safety
4) Healthy eating and living
5) Helping the needy, giving seats etc
6) Be independence like learn to cook, organizing school bags etc.
7) Values such as Responsibility, hardworking, Caring could be a topic too.

Well one of them is the oral topic!)
Prelims results was just released and he passed his composition and scored 42/50 for MCQ (topping his class). For section B, he got 28/40. So Prelim overall he got over 60% for Chinese Language. He was so happy with the result and he had never felt so much confidence with the subject. He will be ready when he is taking it on 2nd Oct.

Lastly, Use this book to check your child's understanding of Chinese Language in the coming PSLE.

(I'm the author of this book if you are not aware. Thank you. )

In conclusion, children need to take action on advise and not to do nothing except dreaming.

PSLE ORAL last minute notes July 2017

PSLE Chinese new oral format is summaried as such "Students will be given 10 minutes to prepare – they will have to plan their time to review both the reading passage (on computer screen), and the video for oral within that time frame. Upon entering the exam room, they will then proceed to read the passage on screen, and watch the video once. Subsequently, the examiner will ask 3 guiding questions related to the theme in the video –

A question about the content of the video – what happened, what did you observe?
e.g. Tell me about an event relating to “helpfulness” that you have seen in the video.
The student’s thoughts/views/comments related to the theme, what did you learn?
e.g. What helpful deed have you done for your friend and what did you learn?
To share a similar/relevant experience, or to further extend the theme to society.
e.g. How do you think the school should encourage pupils to care for each other?"
Other then the guiding questions, students need to answer related questions as the examiners guide the students in answering those questions. Those extra questions are there to help examiners correctly assess the students ability.

The old format focuses more on locations and their related activities and students need to know names of common things, common activities and a lot of action words. (note: What Primary 1-3 has been teaching is very good for the old format.) Now the new format changed its focus: The content(topic) of the exam is very important now as your child need to know the topics by heart.
1) Keep our environments clean
2) Go Green, earth hour, recycling, reuse etc
3) Traffic safety
4) Healthy eating and living
5) Helping the needly, giving seats etc
6) Be independence like learn to cook, organizing school bags etc. https://zbschools.sg/

7) Values such as Responsibility, hardworking, Caring could be a topic too. Resources; A) There are several books with videos so that you can practice with your child, they are quite X tho. B) Get the apps for PSLE Chinese Oral Exam Guide (口试精编) it has some free video for practice. C) School often gives out Oral booklets from primary 4 to 6, if you collected them then they can be helpful. D) I personally find the guide book  '看录像说话' by '大拇指' is useful but you have to ask your child to use all the points and write down the scripts according for every page. Ready made answer scripts in the market are either not in depth or lack key points."Thumbs Up 拇指家族

PSLE Chinese guide 1: How to score in Chinese Compositions

How to write a simple Chinese composition for your PSLE and ace your composition tests. Yes, good essays do not really need a lot of fanciful phrases and plenty of bombastic wordings.  What your child needs is really a working vocabulary of useful words and phrases acquired via reading and listening, and a good sense of Chinese grammatical structure.

1) Read and remember
Reading and memorization of texts are the basic tenet of good compositions, you do not teach your child something they have not read before. Let them read a best graded composition. Do not think like a failure and question the ability of your child, saying, "they cannot comprehend such a difficult essay. why not choose a simple one?" The reason to choose a best graded composition is to provide your child with good vocabulary, good grammar and a good sense of the Chinese language. The best graded composition provides a role model whereby your child can learn from the best. If you choose a simple and easy composition, your child will not learn much at all.

then test them if they can recite the sentences one by one. Yes, do one sentence by one sentence. Until your child completed the last sentence. Read and recite repeatedly help your child build up mental power to handle Chinese language quickly.

Then test your child's comprehension by asking them to repeat the main story line to you and ask them tell you what they like/dislike about the story. Make sure they tell you at least 4-5 sentences long. anything shorter, you have to ask them add contents relevant to the discussion.

When one completes about 10 stories, he has build up a big stash of vocabulary words and phrases ready for the next examination, not only in paper 1, those are useful in paper 2 and oral too.

2)   Write and practice

After reading, the next step is actually to find a composition and rewrite using your child's word and phrases as much as possible. There may be people who insist on not writing as they argue that there is no need to write at all when one can just think up a story. Let me ask you, if you had not practice riding a bike, would you be riding a bike now? Most properly no. We learn by practice, that's why you need to practice driving on a car and not rely simply on the theory tests.

However, parents you need to know that, writing is often the most difficult step to take for any child, so please do point out the good parts for the first 10 to 20 passages. you do not have to limit topic or words, Just let your child write something or anything for a week daily.

Prepare a writing pad and just make sure everyday your child writes something.

As your child are getting used to writing daily, then you start to point out little errors. Do not start the blame game, just tell your child your observation and let your child decide what to do. It may seems like you have lost of control, but as parents you must understand that building confidence in writing is a slow process, and control may just kill the interest.

The second thing about this practice, other to build confidence in writing, is to create a habit. Habits are just a daily repentance of some things that had to be done.

When you looked at graded composition, you will see 3 columns:

Content:       /20

This would be graded according to the details provided, how well the bridge between pictures connect and the relevant of the words to depict the pictures.

Structure:        /20

Structure would be the graded according to the fluency of the language, the presence of grammar mistakes and the completeness of the paragraph written. Overall the essay must be cohesive and purposeful.

The total mark is a sum of content and structure.       /40

 Good luck
