How to help my child score good results in PSLE Chinese papers?

If your child has weak foundation aka cannot read or recognize most Chinese words in the textbook, then NOW is the best time to help them up their results for Chinese in 6 months time.
Step 1: study the textbook texts and read ONE sentence aloud daily and study 3-5 words (识写字、识读字) daily. write down all the words learnt in a notebook everyday. (parents can check notebook weekly).
Do the above daily for at least 3 months. every day 30 minutes.
Step 2 study the words again and construct a sentence per word on your notebook (Do 3-5 sentences a day)
read textbook and check with teacher the pronunciation (email/SMS audio) and rectify any mistake that day. rerecord and listen to the correct ones.
continue until you can read the whole text without stops and all pronunciation is right.
This may take at least 2 months of hard work.
I can assure you before step 2 Ended most of you would have given up or on the way to giving up, SO you need to be determined and have a strong will to survive till now, congrats to you for now.

How a student went from Fail in Chinese Composition to 27 marks in 6 months and he wrote a themed composition! (updated 2022)

Every year there are students who want to excel in their PSLE Chinese Language examination. And one of the hardest part of the examination papers is paper 1 composition. Its is hardest due to the fact the it is actually a test of students' overall Chinese Language capability including vocabulary, sentence making skills and other vital skills required to score in PSLE Chinese.

How to increase your vocabulary to score in composition?

This is so easy to improve yet not many will spent the effort to do it consistently. The first word list for any students to master is the primary 5 to primary 6 word list in the back of their textbooks. there are almost 500 to 600 words there and by really understanding them, students have already built a great foundation to score in PSLE Chinese.

I have compiled a very easy to use word list for primary 5 to 6 students and most students find it very easy to learn. Its BASED ON THE NEW Textbook and new 2017 PSLE examination format. Its different from the rest of the word lists and handbooks due to its simplicity and efficiency of learning. you can find it here.

How to Write sentences correctly in the PSLE Chinese examinations?

Chinese sentences are not without its grammar but the grammar rules are very different from that of the English Language! For example, Most sentences start with a structure like:

Who(Object) Do something (Verb) like 妈妈(mother : object) 在吃饭(eating a meal : verb)

However, the similarity stops there, some sentences will require change of vocabulary or altering of sentence structure to be translated correctly. Buy students often take the English sentence into their own hand and translate it directly to Chinese sentences without much thought and the result is bad.

examples include:

我只想玩Call of Duty一起跟你。(而不是说跟你一起玩Paw Patrol)
I just want to play Call of Duty together with you.

你能请给我一张纸么?(完全是英文的表达方式)
Could you please give me a piece of paper?

我饿了也是。(把副词放在形容词后面是典型的英文语法)
I’m hungry too.

我想去游泳明天。(时间副词置后)
I want to go swimming tomorrow.

这个表有十分钟慢。(这个最英文。。。。)
This clock is ten minutes slow.

So to make sure students get those right, I wrote another book that explains Chinese grammar in a very easy to understanding way for people to learn to write the correct Chinese sentences.

How to Write your story in the correct way to move your audiences?

The third Vital skills in Chinese Composition is the ability to write a story with the best story structure storytellers used to spin their tales. And I will just tell you my little recipe.

Writing a composition is like eating a burger, it has a few ingredients in it like a bun, a piece of patty or beef or any ingredients of your choice and another bun.

Intruduction

The top bun is like the introduction, the patty or the ingredients in the middle is the rising action to the climax and to the falling action.

Conclusion

The bottom bun is like the resolution and conclusion. If all of the ingredients are cooked well, it will taste good, right?

The rest of the story: falling action, climax, falling action

So, if the introduction, falling action, climax, falling action, resolution and conclusion are good, it will be a good story that many will love.

Language

Not just the context of the story must be good, the language you use must also be excellent so it will be fluent and will be a good story for many to read. Language consists of grammar, spelling and use of good words. If you have both good context and language, your composition will definitely be rewarded high marks.

Good phrases and vocabulary

Remember, if you write too many good sentences in Chinese composition, known as "好词好句", will be ignored! So, to play safe, use at most 2 good Chinese sentences in one paragraph to enlighten your story! You don't want to eat a burger with hundreds of toppings, right?

FATS

Apply the same concept to Chinese composition. While writing a Chinese composition, you can write "FATS" at the side of the paper with pictures and not on the same paper you're writing your story in. "F" stands for feelings, "A" stand for action(s) and "T" stands for thoughts. Once you have wrote one of those, you tick beside them. Example, I wrote "我感到很惊讶", I would tick beside "F".

Conclusion

The three key to improving your composition is not those good words good phrases, Its the foundation we call them
1, Accurate usage of Good vocabulary.
2, Proper sentence construction.
3, Good story telling skill which includes Practical Structure for All good stories.
Happy writing and score well

How to score Higher in PSLE Chinese and more in 2020

The Key to high score in PSLE is very simple, high score in every subject! The T-score is average weighted so if one subject is 10 marks less, your t-score will go down by as much as 7-8 points. (the above is an estimation, all results are hypothetical.)

Step 1: Know your current situation.
filling in the follow form

What school and/or (cut off point) t-score do you want? (Give me a number!) ____________/_________________

T-Score I desire: __________(a)

reference points
  1. <=120 : Normal Technical course -----> ITE-----> NITEC cert
  2. 120-180 : Normal (academy) ---->ITE/Poly ----> NITEC cert/Diploma/advanced Dipolma
  3. 180-240 : Express ------> JC/Poly -----> University
  4. 240-   : IP/Express ------> JC/Poly -----> University
  5. >260: ivy league colleges ---> NUS/NTU
Step 2 Know your score
Subject tscore needed is tscore for school*1/3.
(This is a rough guess of actual t-score which will go through complex computation.)

English/Chinese/Math/Sci average score:  __________[(b)=(a)/3]

Eg, if you want 240 then each subject need 240/3=80 points.

Step 3 Know your results
List down your P5 SA2 results.
Eg, EL:80, CL:70, Math:70, Science:50

(all results according to SA2 or overall results, based on 100%)
English : __________
MT       : __________
Math     : __________
Science : __________
*Note, all results are based on 100%.

Step 4 Know your journey
Compare P5 SA2 to Subject t-score needed to for desired T-score.
                  P5 SA2(c)        Desired Tscore(b)        Gap (c)-(b)[see below]
English : __________         __________            __________
MT       : __________          __________            __________
Math     : __________          __________            __________
Science : __________          __________            __________

Step 5 Plan your journey
Determine the gap between desired results and current Prelim marks.
Then plan a timetable to study each subject equally for 1 hour everyday. That will take 4 hours a day to study.

Step 6 Plan a grand plan
Plan a 6 months study program for each subject with study+revision etc
take a test every end of month to test understanding
(If you did not have a test, just go https://www.testpapersfree.com/2019/ and take all the 4 tests in each subject in strict time limit and convert that score to 100%)
Eg
 MonthElCL Math  Science tscore
 May
 June

 Jul
 August
 September

Step 7
Use Prelim results to check progress for your PSLE results.
Good luck in your journey.

How one student followed my 3 milestone plan to pass his PSLE Chinese in 1 years.

Is Chinese really important in PSLE 2020?
Yes. we all know that PSLE 2020 is still using the average graded T-score so your subject results will be compared to the whole batch of students taking PSLE 2020 and your T-score will be moderated against the overall result of the whole batch of students. so if your one subject fail, your T score will drop a lot.
Since I do not have the overall scores for each subjects of all the students in 2020, i will use an estimated T-score formula to calculate your children's T-score to show my point.

Estimated T-score without knowing every subjects mean result = sum of subjects result x 0.75

If you have all subjects 90 marks, your estimated T-score is 270. What if your Chinese just pass by 50 marks, you will get estimated 240 and you could still apply for good schools but if you score 270 you could go any schools you want. This happens with any decrease in scores for any subjects involved.

Therefore we can conclude that Chinese is very important in your PSLE result so every subject is important in PSLE.

Why Chinese and not other subjects?
Because Chinese is a second language and its only used in school for 6-7 hours out of 60 hours in a normal week. That's about 10% of the school week teaching time.  The environment for studying Chinese in School as experienced by my students are quite negative, either the teachers have a lot to say but none of it is on study methods, or schools may prescribe study material yet nothing is said about what are the most important skills to master from those material. So most of the time, you can imagine every student is essentially going a up hill battle to master Chinese.

However, Chinese is not hard to master at all (You need to know that the level of knowledge of Chinese has been altered to match that of the present day students) and one need to study it using strategies to maximize learning effectiveness. However you would see a lot of students study Chinese with pure determination or just plain give up. Not many students could figure out a way to study Chinese easily.

Why the 3 milestone plan worked?
The 3 milestone plan are very easy to monitor, very easy to follow and very easy to practice. The method build 2 things in the character of a student: Habits and progression. This is like a game where students know their status and results everyday. So if one student lacks progress. It could be easily caused by 2 things, either the student broke their good habits and develop bad ones, or the student is not effective in their study method or in other words the study method may not suit the students learning method.

How to tackle the PSLE Chinese Paper?
PSLE Chinese has 4 papers namely
Paper 1: Composition (picture composition or topic composition)
Paper 2: written paper which are divided into 2 sections, section A is to focus on words and sentences. Section B is to focus on comprehension.
Paper 3 is Listening Comprehension which your suppose to focus on listening and note some basic understanding.
Paper 4 is the oral paper which your suppose to focus on reading with emotion and speaking with confidence. Of course you would need to familiarize the students with words, phrases and sentences that are commonly used in certain topics.
Every paper requires some knowledge and some tactics to study them. This part could be up to the school teachers or parents.

There is 3 things to know in this method:
1) Score 50/50 for paper 2 section A.
2) Score 22/40 for paper 2 section B comprehension.
3) Score 32/40 for composition.
When you achieved the 3 milestones, you got 104 out of the 200 marks.
This excludes how well you score for oral and listening comprehension.

How long will results show?
Well, results only show when students do there tasks everyday for a certain duration.

I have a student who almost passed till primary 6 SA1 and he studied diligently for 1 year, then he passed his preliminary examination!

Will my child be suited for this method?
Maybe you should ask yourself 3 questions?
1) Will my child do his assigned task everyday without fail?
2) Will my child think that they deserved better results if they worked for it?
3) Will your child be motivated to do more everyday?
If your child says no to more than 1 questions then you need to motivate your child in the correct direction. I can show your child the way, but I cannot walk the path for him!

Lastly, every book on the shelves teach some sort of method to study, what I teach is very personal and its custom made for your child as I believe every child is different, so it is impossible to have one method that fits every child.

How to study effectively for your PSLE Chinese

Your study method almost determine your result. If you are not performing, then you need to rethink your study methods and refine them.

1) Your Environment matters
Every day study at the same place, same time, and same setting. Set up your study table with nothing except your necessary materials. That's right keep everything that distract you out of sight, and learn to be focus.

Top distractions include Hand phone, music etc. So keep focused and set yourself
 up to success.

2) Plan out your study schedule, space out different subjects, keep breaks in between study sessions. And keep to your own schedule.

3) Record your marks down for every section of test paper to track improvement and progress

4) Find out your objective to study, put it in words and print out, then paste on your wall.

5) Listen in class and take good notes, notes need to help you study, not repeat teachers words.

6) Revise your notes always. keep a habit of reading your own notes everyday.

7) Keep a record of assignments on a piece of paper or take hand phone notes on assignments.

Then you need to keep a study mindset.

You need to know that you study to learn, not for something else like results etc.

Now these are ways to help improve your study mindset:

  • Aim to think positively when you study, and remind yourself of your skills and abilities.
  • Avoid catastrophic thinking. Instead of thinking, “I’m a mess, I’ll never have enough time to study for this exam,” look at it like, “I may be a little late to study as much as I’d like, but since I’m doing it now, I’ll get most of it done.”
  • Avoid absolute thinking. Instead of thinking “I always mess things up,” the more objective view is, “I didn’t do so well that time, what can I do to improve?”
  • Avoid comparing yourself with others, because you usually just end up feeling bad about yourself. Your skills and abilities are unique to you, and you alone.

And lastly you need to be aware of your objective!

What is your objective?
How are you doing now?
How to bridge the gap from now to your objective?

What Not to bring to Trips!!!!!

This is First week of June Holidays, most of us should be either in a holiday or planning some holiday trips.

So I will just go on with What Not to bring to Trips:
1) Homework: this is very obvious but most miss the point. If you are going for a trip, why would you bring your homework? to study overseas! I think you can bring a book but bringing homework for holiday is like you bring work home to work on it and later found that home is really not a productive place and you end up bring work to work again on Monday.

2) Study materials: as point 1 mentioned, you are on a trip, take the break and enjoy the trip, those material will be just a burden. At most just bring a book to enjoy.
PS, Oh you can enjoy your homework overseas with SLS(Singapore Learning Space for all schools), ezhishi or some on-line portal with your hand phone so no reason to bring work to play!

So have you enjoyed the post.

some online works that you can bring to trips......just joking!
