How to help my child score good results in PSLE Chinese papers?

If your child has weak foundation aka cannot read or recognize most Chinese words in the textbook, then NOW is the best time to help them up their results for Chinese in 6 months time.
Step 1: study the textbook texts and read ONE sentence aloud daily and study 3-5 words (识写字、识读字) daily. write down all the words learnt in a notebook everyday. (parents can check notebook weekly).
Do the above daily for at least 3 months. every day 30 minutes.
Step 2 study the words again and construct a sentence per word on your notebook (Do 3-5 sentences a day)
read textbook and check with teacher the pronunciation (email/SMS audio) and rectify any mistake that day. rerecord and listen to the correct ones.
continue until you can read the whole text without stops and all pronunciation is right.
This may take at least 2 months of hard work.
I can assure you before step 2 Ended most of you would have given up or on the way to giving up, SO you need to be determined and have a strong will to survive till now, congrats to you for now.

The 3 steps to scoring in PSLE Chinese?

The 3 steps to scoring in PSLE Chinese?

1) Do something Chinese everyday!
Study 3 words, know their word formation, its hanyu pinyin, its word pair (aka 配词), and how to use them in sentences via 造句. This helps in the overall word recognition and builds vocabulary necessary for all papers. best if you read the words 7 times and write them 7 times. 7 is the magic number to remember things and repeat it enough times for long term memory.

2) Read a good paragraph everyday and try to memorize them. Reading is not a good way to study, memorizing and dictation is better. But memorizing and applying them in compo is even better! Application of knowledge can help make boring things interesting.
(hint: write a paragraph everyday.)

3) read aloud the textbook passages everyday, this exercise builds a sense of language which is lacking in most students.

So good day for all and hope you learn something - do something Chinese Everyday will help you improve your grades.....REALLY!

What is your goal in PSLE 2018?

People and students often tell me what happened in their holidays and their dream school. I am glad that life is well for them.
However, staying in the comfort zone will not lead to better results, Its determination and persistant effort to improve everyday that creates better result.
Are you satisfied with your results, if no then
what is your goal for PSLE 2018?
Goals help one find out what they want, and from there you find out how to get there.

Last year I forgotten to reveal the one little thing about success, that success leaves a trail and a mentor would be best for students to get the success they want.

A mentor could be your parents, your friends or even your teachers. So aside from setting a goal, get a mentor to lead you the path with less struggle.
There is 3 kinds of knowledge:
1) those that you know,
2) those that you know you need to learn and

3) those that you do not know.

Of the 3 types of knowledge, its the knowledge that you do not that will help you the most as those knowledge are some thing that you will never discover if not your mentor.

A mentor had gone the path you want to success in and had success with it, They can tell you something that you do not know and help you avoid the traps and harness your hidden talents.

“
One of the greatest values of mentors is the ability to see ahead what others cannot see and to help them navigate a course to their destination.
John C. Maxwell
So in conclusion, you see scientist had great mentors, artists had great mentors, even great thinker had mentors. for example, Warren Buffet the greatest investors in US learnt from Benjamin Graham.
"Benjamin Graham, the father of value investing and one of Buffett's professors at Columbia Business School. "Ben Graham was certainly the man who set me on the course that's worked now for a good many years," Buffett says." CNBCSep 29, 2017

How about Albert Einstein? He credits his mentor Konstantinos Karathodoris,
"We all know about Albert Einstein, the founder of the theory of relativity but how about the person who taught him and showed him the way to a bright scientific journey which would change the world? That was his teacher, Konstantinos Karathodoris. During one of his last pubic appearance Albert Einstein said, “You ask me to answer to all sorts of questions, but no one has ever wanted to know who was my teacher, who showed me the way to the higher mathematical science, thought and research. I simply say that my teacher was the unrivaled Greek Konstantinos Karatheodoris, to who we owe everything…” Indeed, it was a Greek from Thrace. He has not only been in touch with Einstein but has also helped him to complete the theory of relativity. "
In Chinese saying, the teacher leads the way to the door, whether the student is successful depends on each student.
One way to be successful in PSLE 2018 is to find out and put 7 habits into your life. Good luck!

First Case studies of success 2017

Boy A was from a neighborhood primary school in Singapore and he has not passed composition and paper 2 in primary 4. When We get together to assess the situation at the end of primary 5, he was not too optimist about even passing paper 1 and paper 2. But from his eyes, I see a desire to achieve success in his PSLE.

So I make it very clear from the start that only hardworking pupils will make it, he was not comfortable but he said firmly, "I will get an A!"

So we went through the process of goal setting, target setting and every week we will review what need to be done and celebrate what had been done. He was not too hopeful back then but he carried out all his work diligently week after week.

He studied the word lists in primary 5 and 6 textbooks word by word, writing notes on their meaning, character and hanyu pinyin. He would repeat this process every month and continue to revise those words now and then. And every week we would go through those words and nouns and practice on reading those textbook passages repeatedly.

After 3 months, His composition almost passed and his paper 2 showed improvement especially section A MCQ where he got a pass 26/50.
(If you can write a composition with less grammar mistake, less sentence construction mistake and less misspelling then you have half won the battle.)

Then our focus turned to composition where he would write a composition every week, memorize a list of phrases and nouns and to try to memorize a good composition week after week.

The first composition is super hard, he was no used to memorizing so much content so we cut the composition into pieces of sentences. we started from the first sentence, then the second then the third and the last in the first paragraph. this process continued for several weeks until he got used to the process and the process got faster and faster. then we started to write the composition from memory.

Every week we learnt a new composition, read them out aloud and then memorized them. Then he was to write the composition using his own word words. Why not copy? well I have tried that and children tend to blindly copied everything and learnt nothing from it.

SA1 results shown that he not only passed paper 1 (24/40) and he passed paper 2 too. (I think its due to his expended vocabulary, his MCQ got 32/50.)

Then as July draws nearby, We again changed our focus to oral which is due mid September. There are 2 parts in oral, so we start to read out 5 oral passages weekly and hand in as audio clips via whatsapp or sms. He was delighted to hear his voice and I get to check on his process daily.

But He started to be nervous and felt pessimistic, falling for the weaker himself. I coach him on how to handle stress and fear. And he moved on.

Nearer oral, I practice with him the oral process and what the 3 questions would be. And I go through several topics which I think is very important for PSLE.

(Remember pre-oral I listed down the important contents(topics)
1) Keep our environments clean
2) Go Green, earth hour, recycling, reuse etc
3) Traffic safety
4) Healthy eating and living
5) Helping the needy, giving seats etc
6) Be independence like learn to cook, organizing school bags etc.
7) Values such as Responsibility, hardworking, Caring could be a topic too.

Well one of them is the oral topic!)
Prelims results was just released and he passed his composition and scored 42/50 for MCQ (topping his class). For section B, he got 28/40. So Prelim overall he got over 60% for Chinese Language. He was so happy with the result and he had never felt so much confidence with the subject. He will be ready when he is taking it on 2nd Oct.

Lastly, Use this book to check your child's understanding of Chinese Language in the coming PSLE.

(I'm the author of this book if you are not aware. Thank you. )

In conclusion, children need to take action on advise and not to do nothing except dreaming.

Steps To PSLE Chinese, So what after CA1? Exam Analysis in a simple page

Last Year, Most Primary schools have changed their test format to something nearer to 2017 new Chinese Format, so CA1 is a gauge to the students ability to adapt to the new format quickly. Yes, last year's Primary 5 papers are not totally the new format so essentially your child is just taken the 2017 PSLE paper 2 for the first time.

Now Take your child's CA1 paper and break them into section A and B. Then fill up the remarks with your child.

Sect A OAS                       Marks Scored         Remarks (What Mistake made and how to correct?)

Item 1 yu wen yin yong       ______/30              __________________________________________

                                                                         __________________________________________

Item 2 duan wen tian kong  ______/10              __________________________________________

                                                                         __________________________________________

Item 3 yue du li jie 1           ______/10              __________________________________________

                                                                         __________________________________________

Total Section A                  ______/50             __________________________________________

                                                                        __________________________________________

                                                                        __________________________________________

Please identify yourself first and ask only one question.

And here are some common mistakes to take note in Section A!

1) Lack of knowledge of the words to be tested, either one is studying without understanding or one is not done much studying at all.

2) Cannot recognize the words either in the questions or the passages.

3) Lack of skills to extract answers from the passage via keywords in the questions and adapt the answers according to the question.

Common ways to score in Section A!

1) school spelling lists has been painstakingly compiled by teachers to help students score in section A but most students just ignore the spelling lists when they prepare their exams, this is a mistake. Most spelling lists has common word pairs like this one. And furthermore some spelling lists have a huge list of common useful phrases that are very helpful in compositions and oral.

Just by studying those spelling lists and memorizing them daily would benefit your child greatly.

2) Get your child to listen to the chapters in MOE's textbook reading website daily. its called
XUELE. Take a chapter every day and make sure your child listened N times till they can read out the text loud. You should start with the first chapter in primary 6 textbook and go all the way to the last and restart again. then go to the first chapter in primary 5 textbook till the last chapter. Then cycle back to primary 6 textbook chapter 1. Do it every day and your child will quickly know all the words required of him to read. This method is obviously not for the lazy and the inconsistent ones.

3) Alternatively read a sentence everyday from a composition book everyday. And no its not a joke, if your child can do that for 3 months at least, you will see results.

4) Take my Book and study the word list (on the first pages of every exercise) careful especially the part on meaning (意思), word pairs (搭配)  and sentences (句子).

Its available in popular and other bookstores.

Common ways to score in Section B
1) Do read the questions carefully and highlight/underline the keywords, then using the keywords, go to the passage and find them out  (sometimes the questions do not paraphrase the passage sentence directly so your child have to understand the meaning well enough to find the sentences with similar meaning.) and highlight the answer. The final stage is the adaptation of the answers to answer the questions directly. most of the time your child has to correct use the pronouns “我”, 作者,你 correctly. Sometimes your child have to merge the sentences together with connecting nouns like 所以,因此,而且.

2) For the few Higher order thinking questions,  your child need to be learn three skills:-
(A) story telling skills. When questions asked about relevant personal experiences your child need to write a short account of the desired moral value. a short story with an introduction, a development and an ending would be enough. The point is the story must be relevant to the question.
(B) story extraction.Sometimes the questions does asked your child to refer to certain parts of the passage to illustrate certain values and your child should be able to quickly identify the relevant parts of the passage shifty..
(C) Application of values. Sometimes the questions is about how your child is going to apply the value in life. Your child should identify 2 to 3 ways (that are not in the passage) that your child can apply the value in life.

Lastly, I am going to talk about expectations which I am going to show in a table

Expected grade           Expected Section A Marks      Expected Section B Marks
A*                              50/50                                      31/40
A                                50/50                                      22/40
B                                50/50                                      15/40
C(pass)                       40/50                                      15/40

Without a good score in Section A, Its is very difficult to PASS (grade C) and score well in the paper 2. And with a perfect score in section A (50/50) your child had already passed! Section A is growing in importance this year onward.

Forward to PSLE 2017 Chinese Step 2 The Tools

Step 2 to PSLE Chinese success is to gather your resources for the preparation.

(A) Study Notes
First you need to get hold of primary 4 to 5 Chinese textbooks. If your child's school has a set of notes, it would be fine. if you cannot get it, then you have to ask your contacts for the last few pages of the Chinese textbook which is the bilingual word lists for that level.

For primary 6 textbook word list, it is at the last few pages of the textbook. I have compiled a study guide using the word list with words, meaning, pinyin and even a model sentence for every word and its in this book (FYI I am the author and I will get some royalty when you purchase this book.)

(B) Edictionary
Next your child needs to prepare a eDictionary as required by SEAB for use in PSLE.

Most model now are similar in features and equally small in size.
Hansvision PX2051 is an old model while PX2131 is the latest model.

Compare Besta Models

All Pass 1 Features (On Besta website, All Pass 1 is not listed.)

  • Reference Materials such as Common Epigraph《常用题词》, Hundred Family Surnames《百家姓》 , Standards for Being a Good Student and Child《弟子规》, The Three Character Classic《三字经》
  • World Time, Calendar, Timer
I would often recommend Hansvision model because it has two features that helps students in examinations:-
Quick and easy HansVision Initial Consonant Input method
E.g. mmhh = 马马虎虎
Time saving intelligent wildcard search capability:
E.g. 不*不* = 不卑不亢,不慌不忙,etc...
And the above features extend to phrases.

Besta All Pass 2 is similiar to PX2131 but is a bit more durable.

For a one time use, just get PX2051. If you want to pass down edictionary to younger brothers or sisters, get Besta All Pass 2.

If you need to use the pen feature to recognise the composition helping words, choice only PX2131 or All Pass 2.

(C) Model Compositions
To Excel in composition there are two roads that will achieve your aim:-

i) Read a lot of story book and reread all primary 5 to 6 textbook passages and your child will figure out for themselves the way of the composition,

ii) Read, understand, memorized model compositions in various situations and write a short paragraph daily which will help your child digest what they read.

So a few very good model essays which is A to A* graded would be a good start. Get them when your child's school do publish chinese composition books.

or get a compile of good compositions from friends or school.

The method from potato to 34/40 in composition is described here as a process.

"Little Boy memorized his very first Chinese composition last year in Nov-Dec 2010. We are now September 2011. It has been 10 months. The start was most onerous indeed. To describe the first 25 compo memorizations as long and hard toil, is perhaps an understatement. He could not recognize more than half the words in each compo. The compos were taken from a compendium of 1000 Best Compositions from the equivalent of China's PSLE. They were at least 3 to 4 years above his reading level then. Grandma read them into a digital audio file and Little Boy plugged in the speakers and listened and followed and memorized and recited to me.

The very first week, he spent 7 hours a day reciting these compos. I sat near him. I worked near him. It was, for me, like nursing a querulous sick child back to health. You stay there by his side so that he has the strength to carry on, and to not give up on a task that looked impossible to him. There was nothing I could do for him because I am illiterate in Chinese. It was a bit like watching your child battle critical illness and not be able to do anything but hold his hand and stay nearby.

From reciting others' works, he moved on to writing his own. We were thrilled that he could score 34/40 for a piece of compo homework. But those 3 pages meant 6 hours of sustained effort. Under the timed conditions of 50 minutes in the exam, he failed his compo at the mid-year exams. However, he did very well for his Comprehension because all the reading and recitation had improved his word recognition immensely. Thanks to the recitation, he scored wonderfully for Oral reading because he was expressive and he could recognise all the words in the text. Overall, he managed to do well enough to avoid being asked to attend supplementary classes. Even though he had failed his compo, I convinced him that it was still a triumph to be celebrated."
From the blog post : http://petunialee.blogspot.sg/2011/09/reaching-tipping-point-for-chinese-part.html

(D) For oral practices, Videos presents a normally 2D situation in a 3D way so that your child has not only need to pay attention to details in the video but they have to figure out the Big picture of the Video as Question 2 and 3 will be dircetly linked to the Moral of the story of the Video.

For daily practice, describe news videos segment by segment from News 8.
http://tv.toggle.sg/en/channel8/news/ch-8-news-tonight/episodes

Choose stories related to normal Singaporean children lifestyles will be nice.

Yes, daily practice all the news segments until your child can say them out loud and maintain eye contact.

Ok now is the important part, the 3 questions commonly asked about the video:-

1) Talk about one detail in the video that interested you?
For parents who think this is easy, try them out yourself in chinese!

2)   What is the moral of the story of this video, and tell us about one thing that you have done to related to the moral of the story

3) What can we (as students) do to help enhance the moral of the story.

For an example see below

In short, try to gather the few things below:-
1) Textbook from primary 4 to 6, print out the last few pages which looked like a small guide book with words, pinyin, and English meaning.
2) Buy a Edictionary
3) Find A to A* composition either from school, friends or internet
4) go browse each news segment in channel 8 news, use toggle catch up video to watch and rewatch. Then ask your child to answer the 3 commonly asked questions.

That all for part 2, Wait for Part 3

For any enquires, email mrtan.sg@gamil.com for Mr Tan.
